Single-Phase vs. Three-Phase Motors for Compost Screeners: Rural Power and Generator Sizing
The motor question is really a supply question. Before choosing, find out what your site actually has: a single-phase domestic connection, a three-phase agricultural or industrial connection, or no reliable supply at all.
When single-phase is the right choice
Single-phase is the practical option for smaller machines on an ordinary rural connection — the kind most farms and small units already have. It avoids the cost and delay of applying for a three-phase line, and for lower-capacity screening it is entirely adequate. Our smaller models are built for exactly this situation.
When three-phase pays
Three-phase runs larger motors more smoothly and efficiently, with better starting behaviour under load and less current draw for the same work. If you already have a three-phase connection and you are running a higher-capacity machine for long hours, it is the cheaper option over time. Several Anand Organics models are offered in either single- or three-phase, so the machine follows your supply rather than forcing you to change it.
Sizing a generator where supply is weak
If your line is unreliable, plan for a generator rather than hoping. Two practical rules: size for starting load, not running load, because motors draw substantially more at start-up than while running; and do not run a screening machine on a generator that is only just large enough, because sustained under-sizing damages both the generator and the motor.
Screening machines with a vibrating deck are also easier on a generator than a machine that must rotate a heavy loaded drum continuously, which matters when every kilowatt is coming from diesel.
