Screw Conveyors vs Belt (Patta) Conveyors for a Compost Plant: Which to Use Where

Once a compost plant grows past a few beds, the work stops being about screening and starts being about moving material — dung to the machine, oversize back to the beds, finished compost up to a bag. Two conveyor types do almost all of that work: the screw conveyor and the belt (patta) conveyor. They are not interchangeable. Choosing the wrong one is how plants end up with a machine that runs faster than the men feeding it.

How each conveyor moves material

A screw conveyor (auger) turns a helical flight inside a trough or tube. Material is pushed along the flight as it rotates. Because it is enclosed, it lifts sticky, moist compost on a steep angle without spillage, and it can run in reverse to send oversize back where it came from.

A belt or patta conveyor carries material on top of a moving rubber belt supported by rollers. It is open, gentle and fast, and it moves large volumes over distance and up a gradual incline with very little power. What it does not like is a very steep lift or a wet, clinging load that rides back down the belt.

When a screw conveyor wins

Reach for a screw conveyor when you need to lift on a tight angle, keep the material enclosed, or feed something back into the system. In an Anand Organics plant the classic case is the reverse screw conveyor that carries oversize from the screen back toward the grinder or the bed, so nothing is carried away by hand. Screw units are compact, contained, and ideal for the short, steep moves inside a screening line.

When a belt (patta) conveyor wins

Reach for a belt conveyor when the job is distance and volume: lifting raw dung or finished compost up to a hopper, a bagging point or a higher machine, or carrying screened material across the yard. A belt conveyor at a gentle incline is the workhorse of most plants — it replaces the wheelbarrow and the shovel line.

A quick way to choose

Ask two questions. First, how steep is the move? Steep and enclosed points to a screw; gentle and open points to a belt. Second, how far and how much? Long runs and high volume point to a belt; short, contained feedback loops point to a screw. Most complete plants end up with both — a belt to bring material in and take it out, and a screw to handle the oversize inside the line.

As a guide, reverse screw conveyors run from about ₹80,000 (paired with a Maharaja) to ₹1,00,000 (paired with a Samrat). Belt (patta) conveyors are around ₹1,00,000 for a 10 ft unit, ₹1,50,000 for 15 ft and ₹1,90,000 for 20 ft, typically running on a 2 to 3 HP motor.
