The Moisture Dilemma: How to Screen Vermicompost at 25–30% Moisture Without Clogging the Mesh
Every vermicompost producer meets the same wall. Screen the castings too wet and the mesh blinds; dry them enough to screen easily and you have cooked off the microbial life that makes the product worth buying. The usual compromise is 25–30% moisture — and that is exactly the range where ordinary screens struggle.
Why damp castings blind a mesh
At 25–30%, castings hold together as soft clods rather than free particles. Pressed against a mesh, a clod smears instead of breaking, and a film of material seals the openings. Output falls, the operator stops to scrape the screen, and the cycle repeats. On a rotating drum the problem is worse, because material is pressed against the mesh continuously by the drum wall.
Break the clod before it reaches the mesh
The reliable fix is not more drying — it is grinding. On Anand Organics machines, material passes through a top-mounted grinder before the screen, where blades in a proprietary configuration break moist chunks into pieces the mesh can pass. A clod that would have blinded the screen arrives as loose, sievable particles instead. This is why the machines cope with material that stalls a plain screening bed.

- Clean the grinder at the end of each run; it is one of only two maintenance jobs the machine needs.
- Keep a consistent bed harvest routine so material arrives at a predictable moisture rather than varying batch to batch.
